WORLD MYTHOLOGY FALL SERIES:
INDIA'S EPIC TALE OF "THE RAMAYANA”

September 6th - November 29th on Fridays from 9-1pm

Come dive deep into more World Mythology as we study India's most well known and beloved epic, "The Ramayana". The Ramayana is an ancient Indian tale, composed some time in the 5th century BCE, about the exile and then return of Rama, Prince of Ayodhya. It was composed in Sanskrit by the sage Valmiki, who taught it to Rama's sons, the twins Lava and Kush. The Ramayana is one of the largest ancient epics in world literature! At about 24,000 verses, it is a rather long poem and, by tradition, is known as the Adi Kavya (adi = original, first; kavya = poem). While the basic story is about palace politics and battles with demon tribes, the narrative is interspersed with philosophy, ethics, and notes on duty. We will celebrate the Hindu tradition of Diwali (October 27th 2019) which is a festival of lights that is celebrated every autumn and relates to The Ramayana, as it symbolizes the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance."

Students will be immersed in the stories of Rama while creating memorable art. Once we have a good grip on the epic tale, we will choose an aspect to adapt and capture as we shift and become MOVIE MAKERS! Students will learn about acting and the film production process as they read through scripts, learn active storytelling techniques, audition for parts, improvise, and build an ensemble dynamic that is inclusive and challenges them to work together. Through this creative process students build a set, design and sew costumes, design important character make-up, and bring this story to life! Students will learn by doing as they film this tale. Once our film is finished the editing process will begin and we will hold a outdoor potluck movie screening around the Indian Spring Festival of Holi in 2020 (date TBD, but likely 3/7/20).

Classes located in Tracy’s Homey Art Studio in Concord, CA.

Geared for students aged 7-13.

COST $600
