WORLD MYTHOLOGY FALL SERIES:
INDIA'S EPIC TALE OF "THE RAMAYANA”

September 6th - November 29th on Fridays from 9-1pm

Come dive deep into more World Mythology as we study India's most well known and beloved epic, "The Ramayana". The Ramayana is an ancient Indian tale, composed some time in the 5th century BCE, about the exile and then return of Rama, Prince of Ayodhya. It was composed in Sanskrit by the sage Valmiki, who taught it to Rama's sons, the twins Lava and Kush. The Ramayana is one of the largest ancient epics in world literature! At about 24,000 verses, it is a rather long poem and, by tradition, is known as the Adi Kavya (adi = original, first; kavya = poem). While the basic story is about palace politics and battles with demon tribes, the narrative is interspersed with philosophy, ethics, and notes on duty. We will celebrate the Hindu tradition of Diwali (October 27th 2019) which is a festival of lights that is celebrated every autumn and relates to The Ramayana, as it symbolizes the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance."

Students will be immersed in the stories of Rama while creating memorable art. Once we have a good grip on the epic tale, we will choose an aspect to adapt and capture as we shift and become MOVIE MAKERS! Students will learn about acting and the film production process as they read through scripts, learn active storytelling techniques, audition for parts, improvise, and build an ensemble dynamic that is inclusive and challenges them to work together. Through this creative process students build a set, design and sew costumes, design important character make-up, and bring this story to life! Students will learn by doing as they film this tale. Once our film is finished the editing process will begin and we will hold a outdoor potluck movie screening around the Indian Spring Festival of Holi in 2020 (date TBD, but likely 3/7/20).

Classes located in Tracy’s Homey Art Studio in Concord, CA.

Geared for students aged 7-13.

COST $600

FALL 2018

"THE GREATS"
Famous Artists, Musicians, Scientists & Thinkers
Fall Series

Fridays from 9am-12:30pm

Who are "The Greats"?
The Greats are a collection of famous artists, musicians, scientists, inventors, and thinkers who positively shaped our world with the bravery and persistence needed to follow their bliss, their life's work.

Although each of them faced adversity, they made a consistent decision to continue to do what made them each alive and unique!

Let's dive into their lives to learn who they were and who they became!  Each "Great" is unique unto themselves and so will our projects be!  Some days we will use paints, some days clay, other times we will move our bodies and express ourselves creatively through drama to create short films inspired by these individuals.  Students will walk away knowing the valuable ways these leaders used to express themselves, learn some of their tools and we will make time to reflect on how they too can use their own tools and interests to express themselves right now to make a positive impact.

Sign up for individual classes, by the month at a discounted rate, OR Tracy's 10 class punch card.  Enrollment is open!

Individual Class Cost:
$60

Monthly Class Cost:
$160 (works out to $40 per class)

Tracy's Punch Card:
$349 (works out to under $50 per class!  Use when you want during for Friday classes in Fall 2018 through 12/14/18.)

“Myth basically serves four functions. The first is the mystical function,... realizing what a wonder the universe is, and what a wonder you are, and experiencing awe before this mystery....The second is a cosmological dimension, the dimension with which science is concerned – showing you what shape the universe is, but showing it in such a way that the mystery again comes through.... The third function is the sociological one – supporting and validating a certain social order.... It is the sociological function of myth that has taken over in our world – and it is out of date.... But there is a fourth function of myth, and this is the one that I think everyone must try today to relate to – and that is the pedagogical function, of how to live a human lifetime under any circumstances.”
