LET'S PLAY! ART & DRAMA
~ EVERY FRIDAY from 10am-1pm ~

Come join us for a a fun themed Art & Drama day where play is important, creativity will be sparked, it's okay to get messy, friendships are made, and stories are imagined and created!

Each class begins with free art, then transitions into a focused project of the day, lunch/story time, open play, fun drama games, acting out a story, and ends with a popsicle with friends.

COLOR WHEEL ART
Friday, January 3rd 2014 from 10am-1pm

Let's go beyond our primary & secondary colors by exploring the infinite color possibilities and their temperature values.  Get ready as the paints and color collaging come out!  Learning beyond our basic colors can create a deeper appreciation and future observation of colors found throughout our world.  Afterwards we will make time to jump on the giant trampoline and play improvisational theatre games, maybe even act out a story!

FAMOUS ARTIST SERIES:  GEORGIA O'KEEFE
Friday, January 10th 2014 from 10am-1pm

Let's explore the life and art of Georgia O'Keeffe, the Mother of American Modernism.  Students will investigate flower blossoms that inspired O'Keefe up close though magnifying glasses and digital microscope before using watercolors to create their own large blossom painting.  We will explore both oil pastels, watercolor pencils, and watercolors.

CARDBOARD CREATIONS

Friday, January 17th from 10am-1pm

Let's dive into the wonderful world of cardboard!  This versatile medium can be cut, shaped, poked, taped, built on, torn, layered, manipulated and more!  Student investigators will use a variety of tools and tape to make their own unique creations.  Anything is possible here!  Minds will be opened and blown away at what can be created using simple ingredients!  Bring your imagination and building ideas!

NEW!  FAMOUS AUTHORS SERIES:  TEDD ARNOLD



Friday, January 24th 2014 from 10am-1pm

Join us as we celebrate talented children's book writer and illustrator, Tedd Arnold.  Arnold has written over 50 books, and won the "Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor" for his book "Hi! Fly Guy!".  We will read and admire the unique style Arnold employs in his artwork.  We will brainstorm a new "Fly Guy" story and have a chance to write and illustrate our own book!  Students are encouraged to find and read a Tedd Arnold story at the library before attending class, although it is not necessary.  Reading/writing is not necessary to enjoy this class.

WEIRD SCIENCE!  ZOETROPES, THE SCIENCE OF ANIMATION 

Friday, January 31st from 10am-1pm

Ever wanted your pictures to come to life and move?!  Let's make a Zoetrope!  A Zoetrope is a ancient device that produces the illusion of motion from a rapid succession of static pictures. The term zoetrope is from the Greek language, meaning "wheel of life" and has been around in some form since 180 A.D., with our modern Zoetropes becoming popular in the 1800's.  We will talk briefly about the history of these cool motion makers, and then get busy making our own!  Students will not only create their own Zoetrope, but the moving pictures they will spin inside!  We will delight in sharing our creations with fellow students and then dive into Drama, making our own real life live action Zoetrope Tableaux 's using our bodies to create stages of movement.  Yes!  It will be fantastic!!!

FAMOUS ARTISTS SERIES:  ANDY WARHOL
Friday, February 7th 2014
from 10am-1pm

Let's get to know the iconic Andy Warhol, an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art.  Students will not only explore Warhol's bright and vivid art, but his equally colorful life.  Warhol loved to explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement that flourished in the 1960s and was renowned for being a controversial artist.  Warhol's art encompassed many forms of media, including hand drawing, 
painting, printmaking, photography, silk screening, sculpture, film, and music…an amazing example of expressing one's self through various forms.

WEIRD SCIENCE - PINK LOVE GAK! 
VALENTINE'S DAY

Let's get messy!  We are scientists as we explore chemistry in our making of slimy fun colorful gak!  Students will also have a chance to make a special Valentine for their family.  Prepare to feel gooey on the inside and out!  Afterwards we will create a story to act out and play some theatre games.

FAMOUS AUTHORS SERIES:  MO WILLEMS
February 21st 2014
from 10am-1pm

Let's celebrate the wonderful and witty Mo Willems!  Willems is famous for his work on Sesame Street, but it's when he started creating his own stories that he became our modern day Dr. Seuss.  Characters like Gerald & Piggie, Pigeon, and Knuffle Bunny will come to life as we read, act out, and create our own Willem's inspired stories.  Students will have a chance to choose one of the many Willem's characters to focus on and create their own spin off story to take home.  Visit your local library or bookstore to learn more about Mo Willems or just come to class and immerse yourself in some of the funniest most accessible literature for kids of all ages.

PUZZLEMANIA!!!
Friday, February 28th 2014 from 10am-1pm




Let's use  our logic and deductive abilities to piece together a wide array of puzzles from simple peg puzzles to jigsaw puzzles, tangrams, and manipulative brain teasers...there is something fun and challenging for all ages.  Students can work 
independently or as a group to 
piece together missing pictures.  The educational value of puzzles is immense for children!  We will be practicing our cognitive, math, and fine motor skills...eventually creating two of our own different kinds of puzzles.  Later we will play drama games that encourage teamwork and creativity.  We will end our time together with an all fruit popsicle outside with friends.

FAMOUS COMIC BOOK ARTISTS: SCHULZ, WATERSON, DISNEY, REMI, SLADE, & MANY MORE!
Friday, March 7th 2014 from 10am-1pm


Kids LOVE comics!  Let's enjoy the instant visual medium and freedom that comics 
provide to tell a story quickly.  We will take a look at both classic comics like Peanuts,  Tin Tin to our current day pleathora of beautiful and exciting graphic novels like Korgi, Zita the Space Girl, Calvin & Hobbes, and many many more!  Students will have access to blank comic strips of their own to create simple stories on as well as practice their fine motor skills with tracing paper on their favorite comic characters.  For those students interested, I will instruct them on how to re-create/draw step by step versions of some classic comic book characters.

WEIRD SCIENCE: THE CHEMISTRY OF MAKING A BOUNCY BALL

Everyone loves to play with a good old fashioned bouncy ball, but have you ever made one?  Bring out your inner scientist as we explore what makes a ball bounce!  Students will each create their own unique bouncy ball from scratch.  Afterwards we will test just how high they can bounce!  Chemistry is fun when we can see and feel the awesomeness of chemical reactions in real time.

WORLD OF MOMOS:  PERLER BEADS CREATIONS
Friday, March 21st 2014 
from 10am-1pm

Enter the magical fantasy world of "Momos" as we create our own characters, story lines, and ideas expressed through Perler beads.  These tiny plastic beads can be transformed into anything we can imagine with a variety of colors on our grids, and then melted together to create our desired image.  Students can create their own book and story to go along with their creation, accessing another way to tell a story.

TAPIGAMI 
Friday March 28th 2014 
from 10am-1pm

Have you ever played with Origami?  It's amazing how small pieces of paper can be turned into amazing animals or other folded creations.  But, have you ever heard of Tapigami?  Tapigami is a contemporary and socially interactive art form created by Northern California artist Danny Scheible. Tapigami uses masking tape because of its versatile, accessible, and malleable nature to create small or large-scale art that is accessible for all ages.  Students will have access to high quality masking tape along with a variety of other types of tape to experiment and explore their ideas.  After working on their own creations, students will have the opportunity to add their own ideas to a larger group Tapigami project.

UPCOMING AUGUST 2013 MOVIE MAKERS INTENSIVE:

SUMMER MOVIE MAKING!!!

Calling all movie makers!  Have you ever wanted to make and/or be in a movie?  

Come and join us for this new and exciting Summer Movie Making intensive! We will dream up and create from start to finish our own movie!  

Students will take on many roles throughout the week long process from creating a story, building a character, putting together costumes/props/set, learning ensemble building games that are fun and promote team building, and shooting a one of a kind original film like no other!  This is the "reel" deal!  

Movie Makers will become comfortable throughout the week with one another by having a variety of free art experiences, open play, and focused drama activities that will support the filming process.  This will be a unique experience for children of a variety of ages to learn from and assist one another in developing their own story.  At the end of the week we will have completed footage for a new film.  

There will be a special Family & Friends Summer Movie Showing where everyone can reunite and kick back with some popcorn to enjoy their film!  Copies of the film on DVD and a CD of pictures taken during our artistic process will be made and included in the cost of class so that each child can have a keepsake memory of this special time.

Class will be held in Lafayette, CA.  

We are lucky to have Miss Lola assisting as well as some older student aides who will photograph our journey and help out. 

Students will need to bring a healthy lunch and water and wear clothes they can get dirty/paint on.

Mamas, want a lovely natural portrait of your little one/s in a hand painted by your child frame?  Let's celebrate Mom with upcoming Mother's Day!  Your child will have fun painting and decorating a keepsake frame, card, and gift bag made for you with love and then enjoy playing outside while getting their picture taken for you!  Pictures will be printed up and put together for you to pick up after May 8th in preparation for Mother's Day.  Afterwards we will make time to jump on the giant trampoline and play improvisational theatre games, maybe even act out a story!  And, as always we will finish our fun together with an all fruit popsicle.

GRATITUDE LOVE JAR & ORIGAMI KEEPSAKE FOR MOM

Let's celebrate Mom and practice gratitude for all that she does!  Students will create a very special keepsake gratitude love jar for Mom filled with special reasons why they love you so.  We will also learn about origami and create a special crane to decorate our project.  Moms, bring out your tissues when opening this special gift as it will be created from the heart, all by your child.  Afterwards we will make time to jump on the giant trampoline and play improvisational theatre games, maybe even act out a story!  And, as always we will finish our fun together with an all fruit popsicle.

NEW! FAMOUS ARTIST SERIES: Dutch Painters from Johannes Vermeer to Rembrandt
*SUNDAY* May 19th 2013 from 10am-1pm

Let's celebrate the life and art of famous dutch painters!  We will especially explore the life and artwork of Johannes Vermeer, most well known for his painting "Girl With A Pearl Earing" which is currently being shown at San Francisco's De Young Museum.  Students will paint their own masterpiece paying attention to Vermeer's style of working slowly and with great care, using bright colors to create either a portrait or still-life of their choice.  We will also view the artwork of other famous Dutch artists from The Dutch Golden Age.  Afterwards we will make time to jump on the giant trampoline and play improvisational theatre games, maybe even act out a story!  And, as always we will finish our fun together with an all fruit popsicle.

Wednesday May 22nd from 2:30-4:30pm


Let's celebrate the life and art of one of the most famous and influential artists...Pablo Picasso!  Students will have a chance to learn about Picasso's life through stories and view a variety of his most famous paintings.  We will attempt to both replicate some of these famous paintings as well as create our own Picasso inspired painting.  Afterwards we will explore a variety of drama games and act out our own story!  The fun will end with an all fruit popsicle and time spent on the big trampoline.

Today is themed around you!  Who are you?  What do you like?  What do you look like?  What do you like doing?  We will ask these questions of our friends and more, learning about all our wonderful similarities and differences.  Students will enjoy taking turns tracing their friends as they lay on large white paper to create human life sized versions of themselves to draw and MORE!  Afterwards we will make time to jump on the giant trampoline and play improvisational theatre games, maybe even act out a story!  And, as always we will finish our fun together with an all fruit popsicle.

UPCYCLE A TOY!
Saturday May 25th 2013 from 10am-1pm


Calling all toy lovers and engineers!  We will turn our old broken down toys into new super toy creations as we re-envision new life for old toys.  Plenty of hot glue, string, and tape will be on hand for instant toy building fun!  Have old toy parts or broken things around your house you just don't want to throw away?  Bring them and add them to our magical treasure box of discarded play things!  Think "Sid" from Toy Story, except nicer!  Afterwards we will make time to jump on the giant trampoline and play improvisational theatre games, maybe even act out a story!  And, as always we will finish our fun together with an all fruit popsicle.

CREATE YOUR OWN SUPER HERO DAY!
Friday May 31st from 10am-1pm

Calling all superheros!  Let's celebrate our love of these protectors with special powers by creating our own unique superhero character!  We will transform an ordinary t-shirt into an extraordinary cape that we will decorate with colorful puffy paints and fabric markers!  What's your superhero name?  Special powers?  Once our capes are made, we will transport our super-selves to the world of our own super story where we will defeat our foes in a super-play!  We will end our super-time together with a super-all fruit popsicle!

IMPORTANT DETAILS FOR PARENTS:

Please bring a snack and water bottle for your child.  Also, expect your child to get messy when choosing attire.

All classes are held in Lafayette, CA and geared for children of all ages.  We are located a short walk from the Lafayette Reservoir.  Parents can feel free to park at our location and enjoy the beautiful Reservoir recreation areas and trails...you can take a really beautiful walk and be back in time to pick up your child if you're looking for time to rejuvenate.

UPCOMING JUNE 2013

SUMMER MOVIE MAKING DRAMA CAMPS!!!

Calling all movie makers!  Have you ever wanted to make and/or be in a movie?
